The sound of a whisper hits the curved ceiling and it is reflected on the floor thus making it possible to hear even faint sounds, as they will cling to the walls. The circular shape of a building helps to transmit the sound from one point to another because sound normally clings to a concave wall thus the whispering gallery phenomenon. In whispering galleries, even the tiniest sounds can be heard in the opposite direction. The whispering gallery phenomenon is possible because just like light waves sound waves can be refracted and be focused. This means that only a person standing near a wall can hear the sound as “only a part of the reflected sound will reach the ear at a time” (Silliman 275). ![]() ![]() Thus, standing on a focal point makes it possible for a person at the opposite end of the building to hear the whisper. In architecture, whispering galleries are explained as the spaces beneath an elliptical or circular area. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And although it’s commercially compelling, I’m not interested in making a case for why angels are the new vampires. Going into this project, what I knew about angels started and ended with a very basic collective social construct: flawless features, fluffy wings, good intentions, etc. I’ve never encountered an angel in my every day life-though I’d consider myself open to it (I say this after visiting Savannah, where I learned 80% of the residents are “open” to encountering a ghost). In an age where we’ve actually colloquialized the phrase “vampire-saturation,” where even Anne Rice is crossing over to the light side, and where-yes, I know-there’s no shortage of other angel books being published, it does feel important to trace back to the exact moment that I chose to plunge myself into the Miltonic fray. ![]() Why angels? And author Juno Dawson puts the perfect words into her mouth. I know that I said it before, but seriously Clare Corbett's 13th Doctor is spot-on. This one, for me was a hit - particularly in the audiobook format. I've read a handful of Doctor Who books, dating back to the 1990's, and they are very hit and miss.
